I’ve been on a journey of health for most of my life. In the early days this lead me to replace dairy milk with soy, when I learned about the negative health associations with soy I switched to almond milk. Many years ago I learned to make fresh pressed almond milk at home and I’m so glad I did! Most store bought boxed almond milks contain a common food additive called carrageenan.
Carrageenan is made from seaweed and there is extensive research that shows a correlation of carrageenan to gastrointestinal inflammation, lesions and colon cancer. It can also severely worsen any gastrointestinal issues (IBS, Crohn’s, etc). Even if you don’t have digestive issues, inflammation of the colon does not sound like a desirable side effect of drinking almond milk! Especially if these were the same digestive issues you were trying to avoid by cutting back on dairy.
